Hannah Romanowsky

Dance Artist & Cultural Arts Educator



Hannah Romanowsky, M.A. has been researching, embodying, and teaching women’s dances from the Middle East, North Africa, and Central Asia for over two decades. Initially trained in ballet, jazz, and musical theater starting at age 6, her life-long devotion to dance as a vehicle of joy, healing, and transformation inspired her to found the DanceVersity multi-cultural youth arts education program in 2005, and the Scheherazade School of Dance & Sacred Movement in 2017.

Hannah is dedicated to sharing the intrinsic joy and healing of movement, as well as the beauty of the performing arts.  Through her work she also seeks to shine light on the ancient spiritual history of women and dance, and the rich cultural legacy of the world’s traditions in service to an expanded vision of our shared humanity.

Hannah holds a B.A. in Dance Ethnology and World Music, an M.A. in East-West Psychology, and has been a member of the Sacred Ecstatics Guild under the mentorship of Hillary and Brad Keeney.  As a specialist in dance, culture, and embodied healing, her background in the expressive arts and embodied traditions from the Middle East and beyond, women’s spirituality, and psycho-spiritual development informs her understanding and approach to dance as sacred expression and embodied medicine.

Hannah continues to educate dance aficionados and the general public on dance technique, culture and history through online classes, presentations, private coaching, and workshops.

Ms. Romanowsky was an Afsaneh Dance Academy faculty member and has taught cultural dance history courses through the College of Marin. She has been a guest instructor and choreographer at U.C. Berkeley, Sonoma Dance Conservatory, San Domenico college preparatory, Marin School of the Arts and other institutions throughout the San Francisco bay area.

As a performing artist Hannah has danced in such venues at the British Museum, Houston’s Museum of Fine Arts, San Francisco’s Asian Art Museum, San Francisco’s esteemed Ethnic Dance Festival at the Palace of Fine Arts, the Roof of the World Festival in the Pamir Mountains of Tajikistan, the Desert Dance Festival in India, and on Chinese television. She was Artist-in-Residence at the Padida Dance Theater in Dushanbe, and has taught workshops and weekend intensives in Europe and North America.

Hannah’s most influential dance mentors include Katarina Burda, directer of Aywah! Ethnic Dance Company, and Sharlyn Sawyer, director of Ballet Afsaneh. Additionally, she is honored to have trained with master teachers Suhaila Salimpour, Sahra Saeeda, Chitresh Das, Yaelisa, Antonia Minnocola among many others.
